Potrerillos is one of the tourist centres of greatest importance in Mendoza’s high mountain area, an activity started with the building of the hotel of the same name in 1942, the one that attracts new hotel enterprises thanks to the area accessibility. The decline of the mountain hotel activity is produced from around the middle of the 60’ and El Salto, Las Vegas and Valle del Sol lots start to play an important role, weekend houses for the Greater Mendoza inhabitants that come to 1.800 homes. But now a new change of direction in the history of Potrerillos is introduced. In addition to the cessation of the railway activity towards the year 1980 and the less personnel presence in the State enterprises caused by the 90’s privatizations, the imminent Village area flooding by the Potrerillos Dam lake waters is added. The present is uncertain. Even though the benefits of this building work are a lot, it is undeniable the huge changes for the permanent inhabitants of Potrerillos valley, particularly those of the head village who have to leave their houses and, in some cases, their job, their means of living, to be re-settled in another nearby location, but with very different characteristics from the habitual ones for these highlanders, who in many cases have lived in the area for generations. The investment expectations are very many around the lake, nevertheless, in order to give social and cultural assertion to the local people it is essential to think of new techniques to help them start new economic activities, trying to integrate them to the changing process.
